Most women have at least one piece of sexy lingerie in their underwear drawer, but it may surprise you that lingerie has been around for centuries. In fact, it dates all the way back to the 1700s, when whalebone corsets were the norm. Let's explore the history of lingerie even further and see how it became the lacy-and-racy items we know today.

Corsets (1700s-1800s)

Corsets were a wardrobe stable in the 1700s and 1800s. They helped boost the breasts and gave women a tiny waist, which in turn accentuated the hips. This helped give women the hourglass figure that was desired during these centuries. They were very constricting and uncomfortable though because they had to be worn tight in order to achieve the hourglass shape.

Slips (Early 1900s)

As the years progressed, women wanted less constricting undergarments, which is how the slip came to be. Dresses had more give to them, so the lingerie could as well. This is when lace really started becoming a common material used for lingerie because it still made a woman look and feel sexy without being so uncomfortable.

Victoria's Secret (Established 1977)

Victoria's Secret changed the lingerie game when it was established in 1977 by Roy and Gaye Raymond. Lingerie became readily-accessible to people around the world because Victoria's Secret made it more affordable.

Lingerie As Outerwear

Recent years have seen lingerie make a bigger statement, with some celebrities making a statement by wearing it as regular clothing. Madonna really started this trend with her 1990s "cone bra", but there are many more famous names that have made it perfectly acceptable to wear lingerie as outerwear. The Kardashians, Chrissy Tiegen, and Lady Gaga are just a few more celebrities that have rocked lingerie as regular clothing.
