No matter what time of the year it is, diets seem to be a constant topic of discussion. No matter where you go, you're bound to hear someone expressing their need to diet – whether it's while you're waiting in line to pay for your groceries at the supermarket, or if you're casually overhearing a conversation at a restaurant. Plus, diet trends are plastered over the cover of magazines – so it makes sense to be influenced by the notion of losing weight.

But in today's day and age, diets can be hard to trust. With a surplus of information available, it can be difficult to choose a particular diet to commit to. Today, we'll be discussing the South Beach diet, its benefits, and its potential disadvantages.

The South Beach Diet originated in Florida – and, yes, you guessed it – its beginnings were rooted in the southern region of the Orange State. It stemmed from the mind of Dr. Arthur Agatston, a cardiologist who developed an interest in helping his patients lose weight. The main goal of this proposed diet was to assist his patients to lose weight without having the sensation of hunger.

His diet theory had elements of the Atkins diet, yet he had made alterations that he'd felt were necessary to truly obtain the weight loss goals of his patients. What Dr. Arthur Agatston suggested was to reduce carbohydrates, fats, and to implement a high-protein diet.

He then called this the South Beach Diet.

So, what are the benefits of the South Beach Diet?

In 24 different studies on the South Beach Diet, it was found that diets high in protein and low and fat had significant reductions in weight loss. These studies also showed that there was better retention of muscle mass. These are definite characteristics of the South Beach Diet, which proves the diet's benefits.

The South Beach Diet does come with a few flaws, however. This diet requires a dramatic reduction of saturated fat. Additionally, the South Beach Diet supports cooking with processed vegetable oil, which has the potentiality of causing health issues further down the road.

As with any diet, it's important to do research to determine the best regimen for you. If you're completely uncertain, consult with a physician or nutritionist for expert advice.
